Frequent Questions

Who benefits most from the Primus iSpeed solution?

Primus iSpeed will significantly improve the speed with which you see a Web page when connected to the Internet over a low-speed connection (less than 200kbps) such as a dial-up modem.

How does Primus iSpeed compare to DSL or cable modem?

Primus iSpeed is an affordable software-only solution designed to significantly enhance Web access over low-speed (less than 200 kbps/second) connections. By contrast, DSL and cable modems provide high-speed Internet connectivity using hardware solutions that work with special telephone or cable lines. The price for DSL or cable modem is significantly higher than Primus iSpeed. In addition to the higher price, many areas simply do not have DSL or cable Internet service available.

How does Primus iSpeed work?

Primus iSpeed speeds up the delivery and presentation of Web pages using a combination of compression and caching of text and graphics data, both at the PC and through the Primus iSpeed Network.

The result is a dramatic improvement in performance when you browse using a dial-up connection (or the equivilent). The benefits are especially pronounced when you are viewing dynamic HTML pages, such as are used by the most popular Web sites.

For additional information on how Primus iSpeed works Click Here. A Technical Overview is also available.

Will I ever see out-of-date Web pages when using Primus iSpeed?

Web page content can be marked by the originating site as:

  • Dynamic.
  • Static, with caching policies defined.
  • Static, with caching policies not defined.
In the first two cases, Primus iSpeed users will have content updated exactly as the originating site intended. However, in the third case (static content without an explicit caching policy), there will be instances when Primus re-delivers content instead of retrieving it from the originating site. In such a case, Primus iSpeed's page caching rules ensure that content will never be more than a day old. Web Designers may want to see their changes immediately. They can do so by:
  • Click the Refresh menu item with the Ctrl key held down. This will force a refresh of the page from the originating site. (Netscape users click Reload.)

How long will it take to download Primus iSpeed?

Depending on the speed of your modem and the processing speed of your computer, downloading will take between 5-10 minutes. For example, a modem operating at 48kbps (kilobits per second) will download Primus iSpeed in about 5 minutes using a recent-vintage computer. Running the install on your computer takes a minute or less. The optional quick tour takes approximately 2-3 minutes.

Does Primus iSpeed accelerate DSL or cable?

Primus iSpeed works with connections operating at speeds up to 200Kbps (kilobits per second). In addition to dial-up connections, some wireless, ISDN, or slow DSL connections qualify. If you have not downloaded Primus iSpeed and you are not sure what your Internet connection speed is, you can test it at Numion.com. If you have installed Primus iSpeed you can check your speed by using Primus iSpeed diagnostics, available from the Primus iSpeed taskbar menu.

What types of Web content does Primus iSpeed accelerate?

Primus iSpeed accelerates Most Internet content, see the table below to determine what will and will not be accelerated:

What will be accelerated What will be accelerated What will *not* be accelerated What will *not* be accelerated
All text - HTML, markup, and javascript Streaming media, and audio and video files

What are the system requirements for Primus iSpeed?

The minimum requirements and a list of compatible and incompatible utilities for the Primus iSpeed service can be found on the Minimum Requirements page.

How can I tell how much acceleration I'm getting?

Web page performance is measured by the amount of time it takes to download an entire Web page into your browser. We recommend using an online speed test utility, like the one located at Numion.com (http://www.numion.com/yourspeed/). This page is designed to load pages from popular websites from around the world while timing how long it takes for these images to load. After a test has been run, it will display he average speed of your connection.

You should run this test first with the Primus iSpeed client disabled (Right click on the Primus iSpeed icon in your system tray next to your clock and click the 'Disable Primus iSpeed' option), as this will show you your connection before using the Primus iSpeed service. Once you have run these tests without Primus iSpeed, enable the client (Right click on the Primus iSpeed icon in your system tray next to your clock and click the 'Enable Primus iSpeed' option) and try the tests again and compare the speed increase.

The following are some results from the tests that we're conducted by Primus using the speed test utility at Numion.com. You can use these results to compare how well the Primus iSpeed service is working for you. Keep in mind that the Primus iSpeed service does not increase the speed of your connection, and that the figures below represent the speed value at which, web pages would typically be downloaded to your web browser at.

Without Primus iSpeed (No Acceleration) 35kbps
With Primus iSpeed (High Acceleration): 71kbps
With Primus iSpeed (Maximum Acceleration): 92kbps

You can also view your Average speed-up via the performance meter built into the Primus iSpeed software. This performance meter takes statistical data from the browsing you have done over time and displays the results in an easy to understand format. In some cases, the performance meter may not appear immediately, or at all. If this happens, you should wait 30 seconds as the Primus iSpeed software may still be calculating the statistics. If it does not appear at all, this most likley means than the Primus iSpeed software requires more statistics in order to display some results, in this case it is best to browse to more websites and try the performance meter again.

To view the performance meter take the following steps:
  •  Click on the Primus iSpeed logo next to the clock in your system tray.
  •  Click on the Performance Meter option.
  •  If the results to not immediately display, wait 30 seconds.

Does Primus iSpeed work behind a firewall?

Yes, Primus iSpeed will work with a personal firewall product installed on your PC. Check:Why don't I see the Primus iSpeed icon after I install Primus iSpeed? for settings. Running Diagnostics from the iSpeed icon menu will indicate whether you are successfully accessing the Internet through Primus iSpeed from your current connection. Click here for more details.

Does Primus iSpeed work with Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)?

VPNs provide remote users with secure access to corporate Intranets. VPN traffic is usually encrypted. For this reason, Primus iSpeed does not speed up Web pages accessed over VPNs. However, Primus iSpeed automatically allows non-accelerated surfing of VPN pages. When Primus iSpeed is accessing VPN pages, a yellow triangle (similar to a yield sign) appears on the Primus iSpeed icon in the taskbar to let you know that Primus iSpeed is temporarily unavailable. If you experience problems using a VPN connection when Primus iSpeed is active please contact Customer Support for assistance. We will do everything we can to get you up and running.

Will deleting my browser's temporary Internet files (cache) adversely affect my browsing performance?

Yes. Deleting your browser's temporary files -- often refered to as "cache", "browser's cache", or "cache files" can potentially impact browser performance, since there will initially be no static cached pages. Similarly, deleting Primus iSpeed temporary files -- which you can do from the Primus iSpeed menu Options item -- will temporarily decrease the amount of acceleration you receive. If you are using Primus iSpeed, the effect of deleting your browser's cache will be less pronounced that what would otherwise be the case. There should be no reason to delete your cache on a regular basis.

Once in a while I see a box with an X in it where I would expect an image to appear. What causes this?

Web pages frequently have broken graphics links. However, if you are seeing more than the usual number of broken links, you can confirm that Primus iSpeed isnít contributing to this problem by following these steps:

  1. Click on the Primus iSpeed icon in the taskbar (blue propeller icon near the clock)
  2. Select Disable Primus iSpeed from the pop-up menu.
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key and click Refresh in the Internet Explorer window. [Netscape users, just click Reload.]
If the image appears try enabling Primus iSpeed and doing a Ctrl-Refresh on the problem page. See if the problem reoccurs. Many other factors can cause or contribute to "broken" images on Web pages. Here are some of the more common ones:
  • The Web site is being updated at the same time you request the page. Try re-visiting the Web page after a couple of hours.
  • There might be a more long-term problem with the Web page.
  • Microsoft has confirmed a problem with Internet Explorer versions prior to Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack 2 (case #Q281197). Although Primus recommends Service Pack 3, if it is inconvenient to upgrade a temporary solution to this problem is to refresh the page by clicking Refresh on the Internet Explorer toolbar, or by clicking Refresh on the IE View menu to retrieve the redirected URL and display the missing image. For additional information regarding this problem, please visit Microsoftís Product Support Services Web site located at: http://support.microsoft.com

How do I enable or disable Primus iSpeed?

When Primus iSpeed is enabled, the Primus iSpeed menu will contain a command to "Disable Primus iSpeed". Select this command to disable Primus iSpeed. When disabled, the menu will contain a command to "Enable Primus iSpeed". By default, Primus iSpeed is enabled, meaning that your Internet experience will be accelerated. When you choose the Disable command, Primus iSpeed will be bypassed, and you will access the Internet at normal speeds. The Disable Primus iSpeed command is useful if you want to evaluate the degree of speed improvement provided by Primus iSpeed. Simply Disable Primus iSpeed and browse for a few minutes; then Enable Primus iSpeed and browse for a few minutes. Your browsing experience should be significantly faster with Primus iSpeed enabled. You can tell if Primus iSpeed is enabled or not by the state of its Icon in the windows taskbar. If the icon shows a red circle with a line through it then Primus iSpeed is disabled.

Primus iSpeed 5-Minute Troubleshooting Guide

It should take you less than 5 minutes to "troubleshoot" Primus iSpeed. That is, to find out if you are getting acceleration and if not, why not. Verification occurs in the following order:

  • Do you have Internet access?
  • Is Primus iSpeed active?
  • Are you getting good acceleration?
  • Do diagnostic tests pass?
Do you have Internet access?
Try accessing some popular Web sites. If you have recently installed Primus iSpeed and can no longer access the Internet, see "Troubleshooting Internet Access Difficulties" in Primus iSpeed Help.

Is Primus iSpeed installed, active, and enabled on your computer?
If Primus iSpeed is installed and active on your computer a small blue propeller-like icon will appear in the Windows taskbar area (near the system clock). If you donít see the small blue propeller icon near your system clock first check to see if Primus iSpeed was successfully installed. Click on Start then Programs. Do you see Primus iSpeed? If you donít and you downloaded it to your PC but have not installed it, locate the file propelsetup.exe on your drive and open it to start the installation. If you have installed it but don't see Primus iSpeed icon in your system tray near your clock are you using any Personal firewall software? If you are, your Personal firewall software maybe blocking Primus iSpeed until you register Primus iSpeed with it. See your Personal firewall help. If Primus iSpeed is active while you are surfing the Internet, the Primus iSpeed icon will appear as opposing white arrows flashing over the propeller. Try accessing a Web site. You should see the arrows flashing as Web pages load.

If you are able to surf the Internet but do not see the arrows, there are several possibilities:
  • You subscribed, but Primus iSpeed is not yet activated on your computer. (In this case you may be getting messages to activate your subscription.) A quick way to check this is to click on the Primus iSpeed icon. If you don't see the activate now link but instead you see a menu and the second-from-the-top menu item is "Subscription Info..." If so, your subscription is active on this machine. If you don't see the menu and you see the activate now link it means that your subscription is not activated yet.

  • You are accessing a Web site or other content that Primus iSpeed does not speed up. If you are not sure what content can be accelerated, What types of Web content does Primus iSpeed accelerate? for details on what Primus iSpeed does and does not accelerate.

Using Internet Explorer and AdSubtract with Primus iSpeed

Primus iSpeed + AdSubtract and Internet Explorer Like Primus iSpeed, AdSubtract uses a local proxy server. In order to use Proper Accelerator on a system running AdSubtract, some minor changes to preferences are needed. Changes to Primus iSpeed In regard to proxy settings, be sure that the Primus iSpeed menu Advanced Option entitled "Only accelerate connections without proxy conflicts" is selected. (This selection only applies when Primus iSpeed is enabled.) Here's how to make this change, if necessary:

  • Click on the Primus iSpeed icon.
  • Select the Options menu item.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Select the Only accelerate connections without proxy conflicts radio button.
  • Click OK.
Configuration Changes to Internet Explorer
The following steps allow you to "chain" Primus iSpeed and AdSubtract proxy settings together for use with Internet Explorer. Although there are a number of steps, each takes only a few moments to accomplish.

  1. The order in which Internet Explorer, AdSubtract, and Primus iSpeed start is not important.
  2. From Internet Explorer select Tools -> Internet Options. Then click on the Connections tab.
  3. Select the connection you are using (typically from the Dial-up settings list -- it may already be selected). Click Settings...
  4. Make sure that the "Use a proxy server for this connection" checkbox is checked. If not, do so. Then click the Advanced... button.
  5. Make sure that the proxy address for HTTP is set to 127.0.0.1. If the proxy address is missing or is some other value, change it to 127.0.0.1 (AdSubtract may have automatically changed this setting at some point to "AdSubtract" -- that is fine.)
  6. Make sure that the port number is set to 4444, AdSubtract's default proxy server port number. If the port number is missing or different, change it to 4444.
Configuration Changes to AdSubtract
  1. Double-click on the AdSubtract icon in the taskbar (near the system clock). Then click on the Proxy tab.
  2. Make sure that the checkbox "Use next-hop HTTP proxy server" is checked. If not, do so.
  3. Set the HTTP Proxy to "localhost" (without quotation marks). Then set the port number to the Primus iSpeed proxy server port number. By default this number is 8080, but it may be different on your system. (Click here for instructions on verifying the Primus iSpeed HTTP proxy port number.)
  4. Make sure that the checkbox "Use an AOL proxy" is not selected.
  5. Click OK.
Verification
You can verify that both AdSubtract and Primus iSpeed are working together when:
  • The Primus iSpeed icon (blue propeller near the system clock) shows moving arrows when you browse the Internet.
  • The diagnostic test provided with AdSubtract succeeds. Double-click on the AdSubtract icon (yellow circle near system clock). From the Main menu click the Test Filtering button and follow the screen instructions.
If you do not get the above results:
  • Double-check the changes you made and settings you verified.
  • Reboot and verify settings. Then retest Primus iSpeed and AdSubtract as described above.
If the combination does not appear to be working, please click on the Ask a Question tab above and email us your question.

Re-Enabling AdSubtract After Stopping Primus iSpeed
Important:
Primus iSpeed is run in the background at all times. If you stop or uninstall Primus iSpeed, you will get a message indicating that you need to change your Internet Explorer HTTP proxy setting. However, since the proxy setting is pointing to AdSubstract, you actually do not need to alter the browser settings. Instead, re-enable AdSubtract after stopping or uninstalling Primus iSpeed by following these steps:
  1. Double-click on the AdSubtract icon (in the taskbar, near the system clock).
  2. Select the Proxy tab.
  3. De-select the "Use next-hop HTTP proxy server" checkbox.
  4. Click Apply, then OK.
Verify using the diagnostic test provided with AdSubtract. Double-click on the AdSubtract icon. From the Main menu click the Test Filtering button and follow the screen instructions.

How can I further improve Acceleration performance?

Note: This FAQ is also useful if you are simply interested in figuring out exactly how much acceleration you are getting. With Primus iSpeed in place you should be seeing a very noticable increase in surfing speed -- an average of 3X acceleration, with some pages appearing up to 5 times faster. To get a better idea of the types of speed improvements you should expect to receive, see the Primus iSpeed Technical Overview. It contains a table showing typical speed improvements accessing several popular Web sites such as Amazon, c/net, and Priceline, among others, over dial-up modems. In our studies Web page performance can be significantly influenced by a number of factors including:

  • Amount of data required to display a Web page. If you haven't already done so, try a higher Graphics Acceleration setting such as Level 4 or 5. For complete details on graphics acceleration options Click Here.
  • Connection speed, which can vary significantly even when you are using the same ISP and dialing in to the same phone number.
  • Available memory (RAM), which can vary depending on the number of applications you are running. Even though Primus iSpeed can run with very little available RAM, acceleration benefits can be further optimized if you have plenty of free RAM available.
If you are not seeing a very noticeable increase in surfing speed with Primus iSpeed (or perhaps no improvement at all), please take the following steps: 1. First you need to make sure that Primus iSpeed is working properly. When you browse a typical Web site you should see arrows moving over the Primus iSpeed icon (blue propeller in the Windows taskbar, near the clock). If you are not seeing the arrows or are getting little to no acceleration Click here for important Troubleshooting Tips. It only takes a few minutes to make sure that Primus iSpeed is working for you. 2. If Propel is working properly, the next step is to measure the performance increase you are getting:
  • The mouse-over. The quickest/fastest way to determine the amount of acceleration you are getting is to move your mouse over the Primus iSpeed icon. A small pop-up will appear telling you that Primus iSpeed is enabled and reporting the average speed up you are getting.
  • Performance meter. Click on the Propel menu and choose Performance Meter and Test Page... In addition to displaying your average speed-up, you'll also see your effective speed in kbps (kilobits/second) based on Propel's compression of text and graphics.
  • Performance Test Page. You'll also find a button that will take you to the Primus iSpeed Performance Test Page (PTP). For more details on the Primus iSpeed performance tests Click Here.
  • Enable/Disable Primus iSpeed. You can use the Disable Primus iSpeed menu command to turn off Primus iSpeed for an hour or two of surfing, then turn it back on and use it for a similar amount of time.
  • Independent verification. Numion provides a "stopwatch" for timing page loads as well as many other interesting timing tools:
To use the Numion stopwatch to test Primus iSpeed:
    1. Choose Disable Primus iSpeed from the Primus iSpeed menu
    2. Go to the Numion StopWatch page
    3. Enter the URL of your choice to be measured
    4. Click Start StopWatch
    5. Write down the results
    6. Enable Primus iSpeed
    7. Time the same URL
    8. Compare the results.
                            1. Try the test several times. You can also experiment with clearing your browser cache and the Primus iSpeed cache.
                            2. Numion has another interesting test involving popular Web sites:
                              1. First, disable Primus iSpeed
                              2. Go to the Numion home page
                              3. Click on the Yourspeed button
                              4. Choose a location (or the world)
                              5. Click Start!
                              6. Write down your results
                              7. Enable Primus iSpeed
                              8. Run through steps 2-6
                              9. Compare the results
Just a reminder: If you aren't seeing the acceleration you expect, please click here for Troubleshooting Tips.

How can I tell that Primus iSpeed is working properly on my computer?

Is Primus iSpeed properly installed? If Primus iSpeed is installed on your computer a small blue propeller-like icon will appear in the Windows taskbar area (near the system clock). Is Primus iSpeed active? If Primus iSpeed is active while you are surfing the Internet, the Primus iSpeed icon will appear as opposing white arrows flashing over the propeller. Try accessing a Web site. Does Primus iSpeed allow products that use other local proxy servers to work?

Yes. Products using Proxy servers can work together in a "daisy chain" configuration to allow different products to work together to pre-process content independently but pass the final processed Web content to the browser. Since Primus iSpeed provides a network infrastructure for compression, caching, and acceleration, it does need to be the last one in the chain. In order for a product that uses a proxy server to work with Primus iSpeed, it should have an option to allow another proxy server to be the "next hop" in the daisy chain (instead of going out to fetch the Web directly). To enable Primus iSpeed to work with other local proxy servers, configure the other proxy server's "next hop" to be that of Primus iSpeed. Note: The Primus iSpeed HTTP proxy server typically uses localhost port 8080. To find out the port number currently in use by Primus iSpeed, Select Options from the Primus iSpeed menu (blue propeller icon near the system clock) and click on the Advanced button.

I'm thinking of uninstalling your product.

If you're thinking about uninstalling Primus iSpeed, it's probably because you are not seeing the acceleration you were hoping for. We appreciate this chance to help make sure that at the very least, Primus iSpeed was working properly while you were browsing Web pages. (As you probably know by now, Primus iSpeed does not speed up secure sites, downloads, streaming video, and so forth.) In working with customers we have found that Primus iSpeed 1.0 is often not "in the loop" when they report "no acceleration". In other cases the acceleration of regular Web pages is so good that when customers get to secure pages -- like banking -- the comparative slowdown is quite dramatic. Conclusion, "iSpeed is slowing me down." It only takes about 5 minutes to verify that Primus iSpeed Acceleration is actually working properly on your system. You've already invested some time into our product. We'd like to do our best to make sure that that investment had every chance of paying off for you.

I use McAfee Privacy Service to filter content. Is it compatible with Primus iSpeed?

Primus iSpeed is compatible with McAfee Privacy Service version 4.0.1.24 and above or McAfee Security Center 6.0 and above.

I use Outlook and Level 5 graphics acceleration. How can I refresh an image in Outlook mail?

The easiest way to refresh an HTML page that you receive in a mail reader such as Outlook is to save the page to HTML and then open it in your browser. Here are the steps:

                                                                              • If you have HTML content in your email, you can use the File -> Save As... command to save the mail to an HTML file.
                                                                              • Use your browser's File -> Open command to open your saved page.
                                                                              • You can now do one of two things:

                                                                                • Change the Primus iSpeed graphics acceleration setting and reload the page or
                                                                                • If you are using IE you can right-click on the page and refresh the image or the entire page.
Another option would be to use a lower graphics acceleration level. For complete details on graphics acceleration options see Using Primus iSpeed.

Does Primus iSpeed speed up the retrieval & delivery of email as opposed to just speeding up surfing?

Primus iSpeed accelerates Web page and Web-based email (such as Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) text (including plain text, HTML, markup and javascript) and the most common forms of graphics: most Flash graphics, GIF, animated FIG, and JPEG images. Primus iSpeed also speeds up Web-based email (Hotmail, yahoo, etc.). In regard to email that is not Web-based (such as Outlook) Primus iSpeed speeds up embedded HTML images. This can be significant in the case of mass mailings that include embedded GIF, JPEG, or Flash graphics.

Why am I seeing so many pop-up balloon messages?

Balloon messages are designed to deliver useful information to you about the state or performance of Primus iSpeed. Basically you will briefly see a balloon message near the Primus iSpeed icon (which itself is near the system clock, usually the lower right of your screen). The messages should disappear automatically if you don't take any action -- or you can just click them away. Balloon messages tell you:

                                                                                                    • If the installation of Primus iSpeed was or was not fully successful.
                                                                                                    • If you didn't get any acceleration during your most recent session.
                                                                                                    • The performance of Primus iSpeed during your most recent session.
You can easily turn off or adjust the frequency of performance summary reports. To do so:
                                                                                                    • Click on the Primus iSpeed icon.
                                                                                                    • Select Options.
                                                                                                    • Select Advanced.
                                                                                                    • Choose the Performance Summary frequency setting that you prefer.
If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the use of balloon pop-ups to deliver performance data and other information, please Click Here to send us an email.

Can I use WebWasher with Primus iSpeed?

The following steps allow you to use Primus iSpeed and WebWasher together for use with Internet Explorer. Although there are a number of steps, each is easily accomplished.

                                                                                                    1. The order in which Internet Explorer, WebWasher, and Primus iSpeed programs start is not important.
                                                                                                    2. From Internet Explorer select Tools -> Internet Options. Then click on the Connections tab.
                                                                                                    3. Select the connection you are using (typically from the Dial-up settings list -- it may already be selected). Click Settings...
                                                                                                    4. Make sure that the "Use a proxy server for this connection" checkbox is checked. If not, do so. Then click the Advanced... button.
                                                                                                    5. Make sure that the proxy address for HTTP is set to 127.0.0.1. If the proxy address is missing or is some other value, change it to 127.0.0.1
                                                                                                    6. Make sure that the port number is set to 8080, WebWasher's default proxy server port number. If the port number is missing or different, change it to 8080.
                                                                                                    7. Right-click on the WebWasher icon in the taskbar (near the system clock). Then click on "preferences".
                                                                                                    8. Make sure that the checkbox "Client" is checked. If not, do so.
                                                                                                    9. Set the HTTP1 Proxy to "localhost" (without quotation marks). Then set the port number to the Primus iSpeed proxy server port number. By default this number is 8080, but it may be different on your system. Click here for instructions on verifying the Primus iSpeed HTTP proxy port number.
You can verify that both WebWasher and Primus iSpeed are working together when:
                                                                                                    • The Primus iSpeed icon (blue propeller near the system clock) shows moving arrows when you browse the Internet.
                                                                                                    • The WebWasher icon changes to blue when surfing and encountering filtered content. To test WebWasher, you can go to the WebWasher test page at:

                                                                                                      http://www.webwasher.com/en/products/wwash/testpag1.htm

If you do not get the above results:

                                                                                                      • Double-check the changes you made and the settings you verified.
                                                                                                      • Reboot and verify settings. Then retest Primus iSpeed and WebWasher, as described above.
Important: Primus iSpeed is designed to be able run in the background at all times. If you stop or uninstall Primus iSpeed, the proxy settings changes you made to Internet Explorer will be lost. For this reason it is suggested that if you want to use Primus iSpeed with WebWasher that you not disable or stop Primus iSpeed. If you do so, you will need to reset the proxy address and port in the browser.
Here's how to re-enable WebWasher after stopping Primus iSpeed:

                                                                                                                        • Double-click on the WebWasher icon (in the taskbar, near the system clock).
                                                                                                                        • Uncheck the Client checkbox.
                                                                                                                        • Click OK.
You can verify that WebWasher is working by going to the WebWasher test page.

What are the privacy implications of using Primus iSpeed?

This FAQ describes the technical privacy risk implications of using Primus iSpeed, and the special steps that Primus takes to minimize those risks. (Please note: Primus' official Privacy Policy is the definitive representation made by Primus regarding our handling of personally-identifiable information about our customers. The information presented in this document is for general informational purposes only.) Personally-identifiable Information on Propel Servers If you have a high level understanding of how Primus iSpeed works (see How Does It work?) you may be concerned that Primus iSpeed could be used to track your browsing activities in a way that could violate your privacy. Primus recognizes that your privacy is very important, and therefore we have implemented the Primus iSpeed Service so that personally-identifiable information cannot be easily tracked or easily derived from data within our server infrastructure. When your Primus iSpeed client software connects to our infrastructure, it identifies itself using a unique client ID. Our infrastructure has a database of client IDs that are authorized to receive acceleration, but that database does not contain any personally-identifiable information associated with the IDs, such as your name, address, or email address. Further, we have designed all of our server logging features in such a way that no single log contains a direct record of the Web sites visited by specific clients. Personally-identifiable information regarding browsing activities is subject to the Privacy Policy and can be derived from information logged by Primus only by applying special post-processing. Personally-identifiable Information on Your Computer The Primus iSpeed client software that resides on your personal computer introduces the same sort of privacy risk as your browser software does. Your browser stores temporary files on your computer's hard drive. These files are sometimes collectively called your "browser cache". It is possible for someone with sufficient expertise to use the information in your browser cache to determine what Web sites you have visited. For this reason, your browser software includes commands that allow you to delete its temporary files. The Primus iSpeed client software also stores temporary files on your computer's hard drive in the "Primus iSpeed cache". Those files could also be used to determine what Web pages you have visited, so Primus iSpeed includes a command (on the Primus iSpeed menu's Options dialog) so that you can delete those temporary files at any time. Primus iSpeed Client/Server Communication The Primus iSpeed client software does not transmit any historical record of your browsing activities to our servers other than non-user-identifiable summary timing and compression information, and diagnostic information. Such information is used solely for overall system performance monitoring and quality assurance.

We have become aware of a problem with incomplete page loads when simultaneously using Primus iSpeed and Zone Alarm Pro, a product from Zone Labs. This will result in pages only partially loading and then stopping ("timing out"). This issue has been fixed by Zone Labs. Please upgrade to Zone Alarm Pro version 4.5.xxx.xxx or later.

In order to speed up web browsing, web browsers are designed to download parts of web pages and store them locally on your machine in an area called "cache" all so known as temporary files. When you visit the same page for a second time, the browser speeds up display time by loading the parts of the page locally from your cache instead of downloading from the Web site. As a result it will use degraded images from your cache. To remove these degraded images so the browser will load new ones from the Web site simply delete your browser cache.   If you are still using Primus iSpeed you will also need to delete the Primus iSpeed cache. You can do so by clicking on the small blue propeller icon near your system clock, click on options, click on Temporary Files, click on the Delete Files.. button.   Internet Explorer

This problem is due to a couple of factors:

                                                                                                                        1. Primus iSpeed was downloaded but not installed.
                                                                                                                        2. You may have Personal Firewall software installed preventing Primus iSpeed from launching or providing acceleration.

First, check to see if Primus iSpeed is installed. Do so by clicking in your Windows desktop, Start> Program> Primus iSpeed. If you don’t see Primus iSpeed but you have downloaded it. Click on Start> Search or Find and search for a file called “propelsetup”. Locate the file and open it. This will start the installation.   If you see Primus iSpeed in your program group that means Primus iSpeed is installed. Now look for Personal Firewall software. 7.      Now try browsing to a few different web sites and you should be successful. Once you are able to browse the Internet using MS Internet Explorer, go to the Start> Programs> Primus iSpeed and choose “Start Primus iSpeed”. Why does my performance vary?

It is normal for acceleration performance to vary between 1.5x and 5.0x depending on the content of the web pages you visit and how often you surf. For instance, if you visited only three web pages then logged off, your performance will be heavily influenced by one or two web page load times. If you visit Web pages that have very little text and images there may be only incremental speed improvement.

Other things that may impact performance

                                                                                                                        • Slow PC.
                                                                                                                        • If your available memory on your PC is low.
                                                                                                                        • Downloading files while surfing.
                                                                                                                        • High modem latency or dropped data packets.

Why do I get the error: "Page Not Found" after uninstalling Primus iSpeed?

There are two possible reasons for getting this error message:

                                                                                                                        • If you’re using a non Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser , you will need to manually change your browser proxy settings back. Click here for steps to manually change the proxy setting back for Netscape.
                                                                                                                        • There is a rare situation where we do not automatically change the browser proxy settings back in MS Internet Explorer. If you kill the Primus iSpeed task through task manager before uninstalling Primus iSpeed, the proxy settings are not set back and will cause “Page Not Found” error when you surf. To correct this do the following:

                                                                                                                        Microsoft Internet Explorer

                                                                                                                        1. Check to see if your proxy settings where put back.
                                                                                                                        2. From the Internet Explorer browser, select Tools > Internet Options.
                                                                                                                        3. Then click on the “Connections”tab.
                                                                                                                        4. Select the connection you are using.
                                                                                                                        5. Click “Settings...”

For Windows XP, the user accounts must be set to either “Administrators” or “Power Users” in order for Primus iSpeed to function. Note: This FAQ is useful if your performance was good at one time, but has slowed down. If you have not seen any performance improvements since installing Primus iSpeed there may be several factors that are impacting performance. This information will help you quickly isolate the cause of your slow performance. Simply follow the steps below.

                                                                                                                        1. Is Primus iSpeed active on your computer?  If Primus iSpeed is installed and active on your computer, a small blue propeller-like icon is visible in the Windows taskbar area near the system clock. As you surf Web pages, this icon changes to alternating arrows as Primus iSpeed accelerates the content. Click here  if you do not see the icon. If you see the icon try surfing to several popular Web pages. Click here if you do not see the Primus iSpeed icon or alternating arrows.
                                                                                                                        2. Other applications may be taking CPU or network resources from your dial-up connection. Please confirm that you are not downloading files, and that you do not have unnecessary browser windows open, as well as any unnecessary applications, streaming media, email, or chat windows open. Ensure that your computer is free of viruses. Any of these things can cause slow CPU and network performance, which in turns impacts acceleration performance.
                                                                                                                        3. Run Primus iSpeed Diagnostics. To run Diagnostics, click the small blue propeller icon in the Windows taskbar and select the Diagnostics option. Click Run Test. Do not run this test while downloading files.

Diagnostics runs an eight-part test. The Diagnostics should pass, but if any of the steps fail, click the help button for recommendations. If there is no obvious remedy, you should select the System Info test located in the Diagnostics menu. Then click Copy Log to copy the diagnostic and system information to your clipboard. Right-click to paste this information into an email message and send it to support@iprimus.com.au

If the Diagnostics passes, review these steps.

This step measures packets of data sent to and received by Primus iSpeed in minimum, maximum, and average time (in milliseconds). In effect, this step measures the quality of your phone connection from your house to the phone company. The quality of your phone line can change over time. Things like poor connections, bad telephone company equipment, or bad residential equipment can cause problems. Lost packets must be retransmitted and therefore cause degradation of your Internet performance. If your packet loss is above 5% or the average round trip time is greater than 500 ms reconnect to the Internet and run Diagnostics again. If the problem persists, we recommend that you talk to your local phone company and report the problem.

Based on user feedback, we have seen most modem connection speeds in the US range from 28 Kbps to 42 Kbps. Anything above 42 Kbps is excelent, anything below 28 Kbps is considered poor. See the suggestions below to improve line speed.

Will Primus iSpeed speed up downloading files from file-sharing programs like Kazaa?

Primus iSpeed is designed to speed up downloading files when they are initiated through the browser. It will not speed up downloading files through other programs like Kazaa.

Why am I asked to open the file key.pcf after installing Primus iSpeed ?

The file key.pcf is your subscription key for Primus iSpeed.  Normally, this file is automatically placed into Primus iSpeed. If trayctl is not in the list or if Windows does not provide a list, follow these steps.Confirm that Primus iSpeed is installed by clicking Programs from the Start menu. If you don’t see Primus iSpeed in the list, you must download it and install it first.

In rare cases we have seen this problem. This is usually caused by another software application of corrupted browser cache.

                                                                                                                        1. Check to see if you have QuickTime installed on your system. From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Look for QuickTime. If you already have QuickTime installed, you can uninstall it or update to the latest version. There is a known bug from Apple in older versions of QuickTime that prevents users from downloading files.

Background: There are two main types of Web content filtering.

                                                                                                                        • Computer-side filtering is accomplished by the user installing a filtering program on their computer. This is usually a one-time purchase.
                                                                                                                        • Server -based filtering is done at the servers located at your Internet Service Provider. Server-side filter providers filter content at the IP layer, or by sending Web page requests through a local Proxy to a content filter server. This is usually a paid monthly service through your ISP.

Primus iSpeed works with computer-side filtering software and IP layer content filtering services. Because Primus iSpeed uses a local Proxy to provide acceleration, it is not compatible with some Proxy based content filtering services. The Web browser only supports one Proxy. Please contact support if you need additional information.
