What is DSL?
Broadband DSL is an inexpensive set of Primus Telecom broadband Internet access products that open worlds of possibilities for your Internet use: Web pages load dramatically faster; e-mail messages and file attachments come and go without delay; sound and animation are surprisingly real; plus information you never knew the Internet could deliver is accessible from your desktop. A DSL connection will even allow you to establish video conferencing between your clients and team members. In short, it means that DSL saves time and provides you with new ways of working more efficiently.
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) uses standard copper telephone lines to provide secure and reliable, high-speed Internet access. The great advantages of DSL over traditional dial-up modem connections are:
- DSL is "always on" access,
- DSL works at up to 50 times the speed of a typical modem.
What is ADSL and SHDSL?
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, where the download speed is much higher than the upload speed.
SHDSL stands for Symmetric High-Speed Digital Subscriber Line which has equal download and upload speeds. SHDSL is now internationally standardised, is very efficient and uses only a single copper telephone line.
Which service?
Dial up or ADSL?
Our Primus dial-up service is still the most economical method for casual users. Dial-up is available everywhere in Australia. ADSL/ SHDSL is most suitable for intensive users, but is not available everywhere.
What about cable? Cable services are somewhat similar to ADSL services. However, cable is not available in most business premises. In addition, a new lead-in needs to be installed for cable, either overhead or underground, which may be difficult or not possible in some instances. In contrast, ADSL/ SHDSL uses existing lines without the need for a new lead-in. Also, with cable you are using a shared medium, whereas with ADSL/ SHDSL you have private access providing additional security and speed.
Benefits
Speed
ADSL opens up new possibilities, It is very FAST being 20 to 50 times faster than a conventional 56 kbps modem.
EXAMPLE – minimum download time for a 10 MByte (80 Mbits) file:
- 25 minutes at 56 kbps (standard modem)
- 11 minutes at 128 kbps (ISDN)
- 55 seconds at 1.5 Mbps (ADSL)
Always-on
You can have it on all the time, every day without any time-based charges. There is no need to dial up and there are no dropout hassles. Always-on means that you can access the Internet whenever you feel like it, without having to go through a dial-up delay.
Savings
You will no longer have any dial-up call costs and you do not need a separate modem line if you are a frequent user. This creates significant direct savings to offset the cost of ADSL. Of course there are also the time savings that come with using our fast DSL service.
Internal Networking
Everyone in your office can have access to the Internet without the need for additional telephone lines or modems.
External Networking
As the DSL service provides a "permanent" connection to the Internet you can use it for "private" data links with your Branches or supplier/ client communities through setting up a virtual private network. Technology is now available to make these links secure.
What do I need?
The minimum you need is your existing copper telephone line and a PC. Primus Telecom can supply you with a DSL modem, and, if required, software to operate the DSL modem and an Ethernet card for your PC. The Windows, NT and Macintosh operating systems are supported by the modem software (see also FAQ). Your other Internet software will not only work, but work much better with ADSL. You will still be able to use your telephone line as before. We will provide filters to separate the ADSL service from your telephone service.
In an office environment every user on your LAN (local area network) can benefit from fast DSL service without any additional software per user. You may need a "router" (like a gateway) to connect your LAN to our DSL service.
How does it work?
DSL connects to your PC using a (fast) Ethernet or USB port. DSL operates on a standard copper telephone line (not cable) and uses a special modem to take advantage of the full bandwidth capability of your line. At the local exchange end of your line (in selected local telephone exchanges) we have installed equipment that connects you to Primus Internet. We are in the process of expanding our coverage rapidly. For ADSL we cover many areas of the capital cities. For HDSL we currently cover the capital city CBDs and some surrounding areas. (See Coverage)
For telephone service your telephone line is split at the local exchange. To provide clear phone service at your premises a small filter is provided between the phone socket and your phone. This way your telephone service can operate as normal.
Broadband Pricing and Plans
Broadband DSL enables any business to benefit from the world of Internet and communications solutions with no fuss, and at a fraction of the price.
Primus offers a range of DSL technologies suitable for your business' current and growing Internet requirements. With most businesses connected to the net either for e-mail, research, hosting or the use of private networks, the cost of Internet connectivity can be quite expensive.
With the use of Primus' Broadband DSL services, the traditional cost of Internet connections can be significantly reduced while at the same time increasing your office bandwidth.
We provide Internet connectivity speeds ranging from 256 kbps up to 16 Mbps depending on your business needs and technical capabilities. You may even use multiple DSL services, depending on your router configuration, to increase the connectivity speed provided. The BizJet-Lite service is our most economical service, but it does not provide a fixed (static) IP address for server type purposes. BizJet ADSL and SHDSL provide a static IP address which you may use to:
- Maintain your own mail server
- Operate secure, high-speed VPNs
- Streaming of data for live video conferencing
- Increase your internal network Internet reliability and efficiency
- Significantly reduce the cost of Internet connectivity
Our pricing plans are dependent on the provisioning of a static IP address and on what speed of DSL you choose to subscribe. Primus offers ADSL and SHDSL across our own developed and maintained DSL network in many locations.
